Social Action/Social Justice Committee

Our mission

The B’nai Israel Synagogue Social Action/Social Justice Committee is inspired by Jewish tradition to create a better world by working together in a spirit of respect and compassion to advance the causes of peace, equality, environmental stewardship and protection, and human rights by:

  • Providing leadership for local Jewish social action and social justice programs.
  • Advancing positive relationships between the local Jewish community and other community groups including other faith communities.
  • Educating members of the B’nai Israel Synagogue congregation, local community leaders and the larger community regarding social justice issues important to the Jewish community.
  • Articulating to the Jewish and the general community that for Jews, acts of social justice are mitzvot, commanded by Jewish law and tradition.
  • Performing Jewish-centered social justice activities that advocate on behalf of the poor and marginalized in society.
  • Protecting the environment through initiatives consistent with Jewish values.
Multi-Generational Muslim-Jewish Women’s Dialogue & Social Action Project

In 2013, B’nai Israel Synagogue was awarded the Irving J. Fain Social Action Award for the initiative, “Multi-Generational Muslim-Jewish Women’s Dialogue and Joint Social Action Project” by the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism. Along with Muslim friends, Arzu Khalid, Ghazala Hamid, Christina Ferdous and many others, B’nai Israel women and girls engaged in meaningful discussion and sharing of prayers and meals to uncover common values and deepen appreciation of one another’s religion and cultures. The two groups also joined together to serve Christmas dinner 2011 and 2012 at the Dorothy Day House.
